Well, I have been hearing alot of the DVDs of Toho's kaiju films that come out of Germany, such as audio commentaries, trailers from America, Japan and Germany (I know the german Megalon DVD has trailers from all three of the aforementioned territories), and awesome covers. Though I got some questions, such as how many of these DVDs have the German dub on them with all of the skewed plots in them and such. So, anyone want to discuss German DVDs?

Best DVD cover for MG74 ever.

This is what I found on Amazon.de

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla:

German mono soundtrack
1.77:1 (non-anamorphic) Version. Cropping on left and right.
Anamorphic 2.35:1 Version with horrible quality
Another review states there's a 4:3 version (fullscreen), but I couldn't find anything more about that.

Extras include two German Godzilla trailers (unspecified), picture gallery, 10 min special "Mechagodzilla in Chicago" (fan suit, I think).

All reviews are 5-star.

The reviews for Godzilla vs. Megalon are pretty varied, and none really tell me about the DVD itself.

I'm busy right now, but if you want to know more about any specific German Godzilla DVD, let me know and I'll translate what I can for you.

Damn. Though the video seems to be alittle bit of a disapointment, considering WOTG's DE release was praised by Baradagi...

But the audio commentaries are something which I am interested in. It would be cool to know who does the audio commentaries for the discs over there and know what they know. Though I also wonder about if the German dubs were released (I heard somewhere the German dub for the first film was released on DVD)...

And thanks Cody...

I don't know about a German release of WOTG, but I know Baradagi has consistently praised the FCTW release which I'm looking into getting. The same company has done several other Toho flicks from the same era, such as Atragon, Latitude Zero, and maybe two or three more. I'll look up that WOTG DVD.

I didn't see anything about audio commentaries when I looked over the Amazon pages, but I might have missed them. I'm sure the dubs are intact, because one reviewer mentioned that Godzilla fights Kong in Godzilla Gegen Mechagodzilla.

No problem. It's nice to be using German again for the first time in a while.

It indeed was, and I have a copy of it. Oddly, instead of being a German dubbed version of the Raymond Burr cut, it's a shortened Japanese cut with German dubbing.

I took four years of German in high school. I'm not fluent by any means, but I can hold my own in conversation. I've never seen any of the Showa films in German, but I've considered buying a few (most notably Frankenstein Conquers the World).

Just saw this topic and thought I could clear things up a bit. Maybe a bit late, but at least better than never, I suppose. Wink

In Germany, 5 companies so far have released Kaiju / Toho flicks on DVD. What follows, is a list sorted by company, of all these DVD's - the ones you could consider buying and the ones you should better avoid.
I list them by their english titles and give the german DVD title in parentheses. (They often had different titles, when they were screened in theatres back in the days)

Cineplus

-Godzilla '54 (Godzilla König der Monster)
-Rodan (Rodan die fliegenden Monster von Osaka)
-King Kong vs. Godzilla (Schlachtfest der Giganten)
-Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (Gidorra Befehl aus dem Dunkeln)
-War of the Gargantuas (Frankenstein Zweikampf der Giganten)
-Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (Godzilla Das Ungeheuer aus der Tiefe)
-Son of Godzilla (Frankenstein jagt Godzillas Sohn)
-Destroy all monsters (Godzilla und die Monster aus dem All)
-Space Amoeba (Aliens Monster des Grauens greifen an)
-Godzilla vs. Gigan(Godzilla gegen Frankensteins Höllenbrut)

Comment: Avoid at all costs! These DVD's got ridiculously expensive (at least some of them) and they aren't worth anything. There are no extras whatsoever and they don't even a menu or scene select! On top of that the video/sound quality is horrible and looks worse than a VHS recording from TV. Only german dub, no subs.

Marketing

-Godzilla raids again (Godzilla kehrt zurück)
-Mothra vs. Godzilla (Godzilla und die Urweltraupen)
-Godzilla vs. Hedorah (Godzilla Frankensteins Kampf gegen die Teufelsmonster)
-Terror of Mechagodzilla (Godzilla die Brut des Teufels)
-Godzilla 84' (Godzilla die Rückkehr des Monsters)
-Godzilla vs. Biollante (Godzilla der Urgigant)
-Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (Godzilla Duell der Megasaurier)
-Godzilla vs. Mothra (Godzilla Kampf der Sauriermutanten)
-Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II)
-Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla (Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla)
-Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)

Comment: Sound usually is dolby digital 2.0 and 5.1. video quality could be better, but is ok in general. Some of them, Mothra vs. Godzilla in particular (1964), have quite a good selection of bonus stuff, like very detailed galleries, stills from the movie, concept art, trailer, super-8 version, deleted scenes and some information on the main actors/director. German dub only, no subtitles.

Splendid

-Godzilla '54 (Godzilla Das Original)
-Godzilla raids again (Godzilla kehrt zurück)
-Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II)
-Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla (Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla)
-Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)
-Godzilla 2000 (Godzilla 2000 Millenium)
-Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (Godzilla vs. Megaguirus)
-Godzilla Mothra, King Ghidorah - Giant monster all out attack (Godzilla Mothra, King Ghidorah - Giant monster all out attack)
-Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla)
-Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (Godzilla Tokyo SOS)
-Godzilla: Final Wars (Godzilla Final Wars)

Comment: The quality is either on par or subpar with Marketing's releases, but without all the extra stuff. Actually there, again, isn't anything on the discs besides the film itself. German language only, no subs.

Media Target

-King Kong escapes (King Kong Frankensteins Sohn)
-Godzilla vs. Megalon (Godzilla gegen Megalon)
-Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla '74 (Godzilla gegen Mechagodzilla)

Comment: Video quality is kinda subpar, but that's on purpose. They tried to give the original theatre feeling and let grain and slight damages within the final version. As strange as it sounds, it really works, I like it. These 3 DVD's all have quite a lot extra content again with 5-6 classic Toho trailers each and more hidden stuff. Very sought after, usually fetch prices up to $100+. Only german, no english or japanese sound, no subs.

Anolis

-Frankenstein qonquers the world (Frankenstein der Schrecken mit dem Affengesicht)
-Son of Godzilla (Frankensteins Monster jagen Godzillas Sohn)
-Atragon (U 2000 Tauchfahrt des Grauens)
-Latitude Zero (U 4000 Panik unter dem Ozean)

Comment: These are the ones you should watch out for. Even surpass the Tokyo Shock DVD's and offer perfect video and sound quality. They're all steelbooks and each one offers the german and the uncut japanese version. Latitude Zero is a 2-disc set and also includes the american cut. All come with lots of special content (basically everything you could think of) and an audio commentary. A collector's dream. Pricetag is a bit higher, but imo definitely worth it (~$40). Anolis plans to release vs. Monster Zero, Destroy all Monsters and War of the Gargantuas during the next years and these are probably all going to be ace.

If you have any further questions, like what extra content exactly is on the DVD's, feel free to ask and I'll gladly help you out if possible. Smile

Who does the commentaries? What was the deal with the German DVD release of GFW letting German fans have first grabs at the Bandai 6" Finaro-Goji and Tokyo SOS Mothra, among others? Any english based sites which some could buy thiese from?

Actually, most of the Splendid releases have the original Japanese audio too. The only exceptions are (if I remember correctly) the Heisei releases.

Also, there are different versions of the GFW DVD. I have the 2-disc version, which has a second disc containing bonus material like a behind-the-scenes featurette. In fact, I prefer that one over the "B-Roll" on the R1 Sony DVD. On another note, the video on the GFW DVD, interestingly, isn't the same as on the Japanese and US DVDs. All the color tints have been removed, although on the bad side, there's some print damage for some reason.

Any chance of posting some picture comparrisons of GFW?

Usually german Godzilla fans, who are rather popular in the german Kaiju scene, but not internationally.

I don't know about any english based sites, but here are some pictures, so you know who these sets look like:

Godzilla

Mothra

Just checked the DVD's and to my surprise, the millenium films indeed have a japanese audiotrack available. However, you can't turn off the german subtitles with them, I knew something was wrong there. Wink
So the only Splendid DVD's with exclusively german language are, as you said, the Heisei ones:

-Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II)
-Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla (Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla)
-Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)

There are four versions:

-Single DVD
-2 DVD set (second disc has a 20min behind the scene featurette)
-5-DVD set (japanese Godzilla '54 cut, german Godzilla '54 cut, US Godzilla '54 cut, Final Wars, Behind the scene featurette)
-5-DVD set + Bandai 6'' Finaro Goji

I've only seen the german version of GFW, but I've read elsewhere about the b&w scenes being in colour again. Didn't feel the film would be worth watching another time tbh so I don't know anything certain...

The new Splendid DVD of GODZILLA KEHRT ZURÜCK contains the original German theatrical dub which was thought lost. How does it compare to the Marketing release, and are the original German titles on the film still intact?

After looking at the Anolis discs online, I'm really considering buying a few. Especially the Frankenstein Conquers the World disc. I already have three versions of it, so why not a fourth? And the Godzilla Kehrt Zurück looks like a treat too (presumably lost German dubbing!? I'm in!).

Und es gibt mir einen Grund um mein Deutsch zu üben.

EDIT: Stupid censor.
