why?
-Neon lights at night, gives fantastic aesthetic that fits with the overall “futuristic, neon” vibe of the film

-Many buildings of various shapes and sizes, provides a multitude of possibilities for shots, fights, and choreography

-Hong Kong. Hong Kong. Hong Kong.

Plus the electronic blade-runner-esque music during that moment just adds to it.

The figurative imagery of HK being leveled.

The lighting that HK provides as a backdrop in a battle scene.

The level of engagement on the part of the Chinese audience as a result of the HK setting.

All the buildings and stuff.

Personally, I would've had them fight in NY and Tokyo, with Kong winning in NY and Godzilla in Tokyo. It would be pretty awesome to see them bring it home... maybe in a future film.

I mean, I would’ve loved to see them fight in LA or yeah, even NY — I just know it wouldn’t have been the same.

I went with NY and Tokyo because they are the iconic home cities of Kong and Godzilla. Plus, Godzilla's been to NY twice(?) but Kong has never been to Tokyo before, to my knowledge. It'd be really cool.

I was just talking to my buddy about this, especially New York City. It's a relatively small patch of land that's densely packed with structures, I've wanted to see the Monsterverse go there since '14 because it has so much "destruction porn" potential. After seeing the finished product, and the way Wingard and co. utilized Hong Kong's buildings I REALLY wish the Big Fellas would have fought in NYC.
Kong did hit up Tokyo in KKvG and Escapes, but he didn't smash much.

NY is played out, I know they got new sky rises and all — but naw.

Now, NY 2121? That’s a different ball of wax.

Just got back. Um.... basically, it was crap. Some cool moments here and there, strung together by a bunch of nonsense and poor execution. The fact that it was this franchise's The Force Awakens was a slap in the face, too. "Yo, remember all that cool world building we did in the last three movies? Yeah, fuck that shit. Da Kings killed all the other titans off-screen and Skull Island drowned. Enjoy."

*sigh* It's okay, though. I wasn't expecting gold, so I'm not too disappointed.

The other titans weren’t killed, just defeated. Skull Island is still there too, thought it’s not made all that apparent in the film. Other than that, i understand your criticisms and kinda-sorta agree to a minimal extent. Still very much love GvK tho

Doubt it'll change your opinion on the movie but
Spoiler:
Dominion reveals Godzilla ordered all the titans to go back into hibernation upon sensing King Ghidorah's presence (Mechagodzilla) so they wouldn't fall under his spell again.

One could presume the titans were listed as "Defeated" due to Godzilla's rampage and so MONARCH and the public assumed he killed them.
That said, hopefully we get an extended cut, one that's at least 2 or 2 hours and 10-15 minutes. Enough to fill in some missing gaps.

Nah, doesn't help. That actually makes it worse, even, considering Ghidorah was what woke them from hibernation to begin with. Just a lazy bullshit excuse to cover a lame decision by the writers.

Spoiler:
This time though if King Ghidorah ever called them again, they'd resist as this time they follow and recognize Godzilla as their leader and alpha titan.
Still don't expect this to help for you but just trying to help things make more sense perhaps.

Their defeated becasue 90% of them immediately back down when Godzilla shows up. The Beta Titans don't even attempt to fight him unless they're starving.

Added in 1 minute 23 seconds:

Spoiler:
There isn't enough resources for all the Titans to be awake at once so Godzilla tells them to go back to sleep.

My comment got lost in the sauce, but since yall were speaking about perspective, how fast do yall think they are actually moving?

And Skull Island did not sink, where did you even get that? The very first scene in the movie is on skull island?

Interesting tidbit from a godzilla-movies.com interview with MechaG concept artist/designer Jared Krichevsky:
Q: Can you tell us something unique about Mechagodzilla that we may not have noticed easily watching the film?

A: The buzzsaw fingers, that was something I pitched in the room, and I'm not sure if it really was noticed or if it didn't get any attention at the time, but it's something that I put into the claw hands. You can see them working up close and hear the sound design when he's gripping Godzilla's head in a closeup. It was actually the thing I was most excited to confirm when I saw the leaks. I was like "Oh My God I can't believe they kept it" because admittedly, I thought it would be too brutal for a tent pole movie, but I am so thrilled that they kept it. It would be something cruel, that they could use to burrow through Godzilla's incredibly thick hide. So I like to think when he's splitting that skull crawler apart, he's also shredding his arms as he's doing it. Made me positively giddy, I just tried to think of as many ways as possible to stop Godzilla or any other Titan from a human perspective.
