Godzilla took a real stinging, but kept on ticking.
Even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright.

Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

So...does anyone else here love the opening montage/altered history/action scene as much as I do?

Seriously...its SO good...well...it is to me.

Yeah, I generally stand by that sequence. Particularly the shots from the alley towards Godzilla, which give a nice sense of scale.Grievous wrote:So...does anyone else here love the opening montage/altered history/action scene as much as I do?

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

It's a cool sequence. The trash cans in the alley always take me out of it, though. Not really sure how they could have done it better, but there is something about how they move or sound or look that really looks cheap to me.

That's part of the biggest problem with vs. Megaguirus...
the effects are so uneven in places...and yet in some
shots & scenes look fantastic.
Perhaps a slightly larger budget with a little more time
would have helped "iron out" those issues.
I guess for me personally its a "50/50" Godzilla film...
50% of it I love...but the other 50% makes me cringe.

Its not one of my favorites...but for
some reason I have watched it many,
many times.

Re: Talkback: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
Kenji Suzuki’s special effects in his two Godzilla films are ambitious but not very good. At least in G2K he had the luxury of hiding some bad mattes and CGI characters in dark nighttime sequences.
I agree that the trash cans in the alley shot is bad but I appreciate the intent. Also poorly executed is Godzilla moving his head side to side in the alley trying to track to soldiers below. The Godzilla suit wasn’t built for that kind of movement but nevertheless Suzuki has Kitagawa do it and it looks awful. Even worse is Suzuki having Godzilla snap his head around to glare at Kiriko. The idea isn’t necessarily bad but again, it’s obvious the Godzilla suit wasn’t supposed to be able to move that way.

This is all extremely on point. The intent is cool, but the execution is where it falls short.Terasawa wrote:Kenji Suzuki’s special effects in his two Godzilla films are ambitious but not very good. Yeah, barring Mothra, easily the coolest insect Kaiju.Major sssspielberg! wrote:Megaguiris is mad underrated!
I also liked how they brought back the Meganulon. I wish they did something similar with Matango.
One thing that always bothered me though is how Megaguirus only has one big scene on screen, and then the final fight. I get that the Meganulon turn into Megaguirus, but I wish the creature had more screentime independent of Godzilla in order to develop more. Also it sortve bothers me how Megaguirus just leaves, only to randomly come back when Godzilla shows up. I guess the easy implication is that Megaguirus sensed the energy in Godzilla?

Re: Talkback: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
Essentially, Megaguirus is the b-plot of the movie. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is one of the few Godzilla movies that's really driven by the actions/choices of its human protagonists (Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Gigan and Godzilla vs. Biollante also leap to mind). When the humans are really the ones instigating the plot, sometimes the enemy monsters get reduced to plot complications is more of a Godzilla vs. people story. Megaguirus just didn't make its monster central enough to the action, so she got short-changed.LSD Jellyfish wrote:Yeah, barring Mothra, easily the coolest insect Kaiju.Major sssspielberg! wrote:Megaguiris is mad underrated!

Yeah. I would say that the dimension Tide is actually the bigger threat of the movie to Godzilla.eabaker wrote:Essentially, Megaguirus is the b-plot of the movie. The first “fight” with the Meganula is actually interrupted by the dimension tide.
Also, the Japanese title makes more sense because it includes the dimension tide. It makes the film seem more about then Godzilla fighting Megaguirus.
