Didn't we only get a sequel to Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla because Toho had some ideas that Tezuka thought were boring and he wrote Tokyo SOS overnight as a substitute?

They didn't kill godzilla though. Just wounded him and removed the reason for why he kept attacking.edgaguirus wrote:It wouldn't be the first time Toho has left a door slightly open. Whenever they kill Godzilla, they always do something to ensure his return.

So, I know I'm super late on this, but I just watched the longer Sci-Fi Japan with Tezuka.
Wow. What an insight into the factory-like nature of these films. I've also come away with a bit more respect for them. Sounds like he wanted to make kids' movies in which the humans never give up -- fair, although I still greatly dislike incorporating "fun" super-weapons into it, as it comes at the cost of heavier themes that are ingrained into the franchise. It also sounds as if his original ending for Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla would have made much more sense of the film. That's disappointing, but it makes sense that the stories in the Millenium films feel so muddled after Godzilla 2000 -- these are very producer-down, whims-of-the-studio affairs. On the one hand, that can be the fun of the genre. On the other hand, too bad.
Also sounds like Okawara and Kawakita never agreed with each other creatively, which ... makes so much sense.

I don't remember hearing anything like that in the interview, could you elaborate please? It sounds really interesting.Rodan wrote:Also sounds like Okawara and Kawakita never agreed with each other creatively, which ... makes so much sense.

Yeah; he talks about being an assistant director bringing scene orders to Kawakita and Kawakita saying he couldn't film them, didn't Tezuka think the scenes were uninteresting, etc., to which he had to reply that he was just an assistant director and his opinions didn't matter.Kaiser wrote:I don't remember hearing anything like that in the interview, could you elaborate please? He also references Kawakita's drinking penchant. I mean, he only talks about them getting beer, but the picture he paints is of a pretty unruly guy who had to be reined in by his staff. At any rate, it's quite clear he and Okawara didn't much see eye to eye.

If there's something that I really like about the movie, is the good combination of effects. Good suitmation, and CGI when needed.

Still need to watch this. It's the only one I haven't seen yet. Been a little hesitant as I cared little for the first one. Besides I just never really have time to sit down and watch a movie.

Okayish direct sequel to MxMG covers too much of the same ground while simultaneously borrowing heavily from early Mothra films. The return of Hiroshi Koizumi is the highlight of the flick, but the fight between the adult Mothra and Godzilla isn't too shabby, either. Noboru Kaneko leads a not-so-wild force of young characters who leave no real impact, and the cameo from Yumiko Shaku feels like a tease. Not the worst, but hardly essential viewing.

I like GXMG better for the human touch it has. But GTSOS is straight up monster porn and I love it too.

Both movies of the Kiryu-story are alright. I can't be without both of them. They go hand-and-hand to me viewing experience with the two.

I like both of the Kiryu films, GxMG a little more. My issue with SOS is they brought in a different team for Kiryu. It honestly makes no sense to use another team. SOS would have been a much better film if the cast from the first was used again.Giga Kaiju wrote:Both movies of the Kiryu-story are alright. I can't be without both of them. I still very much enjoy this one, though, in the same way I enjoy Jurassic Park III: It gets straight to the basics that you come to watch - badass monster action. And the effects in this movie look spectacular, arguably the best of the whole series.

It was still used. Somewhat as side-characters, but still. It'd make sense of it for them to return instead of going 'overseas to learn new techiniques in fighting styles for Kiryu...'Cookson wrote:I like both of the Kiryu films, GxMG a little more. I agree with that point of yours about the cast though.

Amazing Mothra prop, Eiichi Asada knocked the spfx out of the ball park imo but the story bored me to tears and this film has some of the worst editing in the entire series. This film and GxMG are both forgettable films which is a shame because Kiryu is one pretty mech and the Godzilla suit is gorgeous.

Re: Talkback: Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
One of my least favorite Godzilla movies and a very disappointing sequel to its predecessor. I've only watched it through once or twice and I was bored each time. Hated how all the previous characters were tossed aside for new ones I didn't even remotely care for...and need I talk about the blatant reuse of the Mothra Vs. Godzilla plot?
Also, another thing that really bugged me about this movie...I felt this was where Godzilla started taking too many cues from fucking anime, the previous film did too but it wasn't as bad and I could overlook it. This one...not so much.
