Series Swap - What if Godzilla was in Heisei Gamera's World?

Post by Desghidorah »

Had a fun discussion with friends that amounted to the question of, "What if post-G3 Gamera got warped into the Heisei Godzilla timeline right after Vs. Biollante?". It was fun and had a lot of inventive or branching ideas on how the Guardian of the Universe might alter the Heisei Godzilla timeline if he arrived just as the Futurians did. Would Godzilla ever get cured of the ANEB? What foes could Gamera defeat or need help against? What happens to Godzilla Junior? Lots of possibilities got brought up and I dimly remembered a post similar to it here on Tohokingdom. So I'm curious as to the reverse. Let's say the 1980s Godzilla wound up in the world of the Heisei Gamera trilogy during the events of Guardian of the Universe. Not quite a VS. question so that's why I'm putting it here and not in Fantasy Matches, but if mods disagree feel free to move it.

Scenario 1: Just before the 1984 attack on Tokyo, Godzilla is teleported into the world of Guardian of the Universe right after Gamera becomes mobile and takes his place. What happens?

Exactly how it sounds. I picked the 1980s version of the Heisei Godzilla as the scaling for size meshes with the Gamera kaiju better and the crazier numbers noted in the collection books only started kicking in post-Power up by Shindo's submarine. It is possible that given his psychic sensitivity, that Asagi's magatama somewhat connects to Godzilla to some degree or another like Miki did, in Gamera's absence, but this is not guaranteed. It is quite possible Godzilla would home in on the gyaos however, as their ultrasonic frequencies would be similar to the birds that spurred his attention in his own movies and he very well might be territorial enough to attack them. Still, this is Godzilla we're talking about so even if he isn't as especially malignant as he'd be in later films, there's going to be a lot of damage.

Scenario 2: More simplistic. Godzilla ('84-89) is warped into the world at about the same time Guardian of the Universe starts up and Gamera is still around. What happens?

Mostly similar to Scenario 1, but the flying turtle patrol is still in play. Gamera might have reason to oppose Godzilla later, but I gander he'd focus on the gyaos in the while with Godzilla being the destructive neutral party whom may attack either if he got close. Tangentially they both might be more against the gyaos than each other, as Godzilla would have little reason to chase after Gamera as he might the frequencies the gyaos give off, but any scuffle between the two might give the gyaos enough leeway to grow in size or strength. Without Gamera able to focus heavily on the gyaos and likely taking damage from Godzilla, more than one gyaos might become a Super Gyaos. Unable to chase down the flying Gamera, whom might retreat from a battle, Godzilla might make his way to Tokyo following the gyaos pair. Gamera would heal as per normal and rejoin the fray, which might turn into a chaotic 1 v 2 v 1.

I'll take a swing at scenario 2.

Godzilla arrives in the middle of the Pacific ocean, but both because it's his ancestral migration route and the ultrasonic frequencies given off by the gyaos, he makes his way to Japan. The plan to trap the gyaos in the baseball stadium is underway. Because Gamera was listed as moving at 40 knots and Godzilla has roughly the same swimming speed by the 84 film stats, both arrive in Fukuoka at approximately the same time, but likely by different routes. Because there is no military presence in Fukuoka to agitate him nor nuclear power plant to seek as food (closest one is in Kyushu), Godzilla largely just causes damage by wandering through the city. The fact two 80 meter tall monsters and the gyaos are present would likely be more than enough reason to scramble an evacuation, but obviously not everyone is going to get free. Gamera still would be able to kill one of the three gyaos, but his efforts to reach the other two might by further muddied by Godzilla showing up at the stadium from the opposite direction. The two would probably have a short scuffle, with Godzilla's atomic breath doing some damage to Gamera, but Gamera's plasma balls being able to knock over Godzilla. Gamera takes the chance to retreat and heals, intent on continuing to pursue the gyaos. Godzilla meanwhile would recover quickly and unable to chase down an airborne Gamera, would probably go on a short rampage before returning to the ocean.

Reason this battle may not be more severe is while Gamera is at his weakest in GotU, the 1980s version of the Heisei Godzilla was also much less extreme than he'd get after multiple power-ups starting with Shindo's submarine. Additionally, the two have little reason to attack one another outside of territoriality with Godzilla and getting in the way of killing the gyaos with Gamera. This brawl would however plant the seeds for animosity. As Gamera was more heavily damaged earlier on than he was in the original film, when he sets to heal in the deep ocean, his adaptability would start to kick in and try to regenerate his body to be stronger. This event would probably also tip the cast off to the nature of the magatama and Asagi's tether to Gamera quicker than in canon, but they'd also be at a loss to try and explain how Godzilla fits into things. Godzilla meanwhile would probably stop by the nearest nuclear plant he could find, likely the previously mentioned Kyushu.

With the military scrambling to stop the monsters, the response might be more focused on Gamera and Godzilla due to them causing far more damages and potential for mass loss of life. Because Gamera would be off recuperating from the fight with Godzilla, Godzilla would the one targeted the most and incite his wrath. This would keep Godzilla from leaving out to sea, meaning he's also be attracted to where the gyaos are. The gyaos being gyaos, any contact they have would likely result in them trying to fell and eat Godzilla; further inciting the dinosaur to attack. This means the confrontation in the mountains would likely be less "Gamera heroically saving the humans from the gyaos' ray" and more "Godzilla barging into the gyaos' attack on the village and the cast trying to get out of the way". Gamera would likely return at this point, modified and more in line with his G2 appearance, and engage everything while trying to protect the humans. Because of Godzilla's blustering into the situation and focusing on both Gamera and the gyaos, more than one gyaos might survive to the final and result in there being two super gyaos on the attack.

Ironically because they've proven the least destructive thus far, the military would likely concentrate efforts on Godzilla followed by Gamera and try to keep the gyaos alive as they might prove their best bet at stopping the other two. This intrusion would likely result in a big fight between Gamera and Godzilla near Mount Fuji with the gyaos and military taking pot-shots at them. However with Gamera having had the chance to adapt, the fight wouldn't be as in favor of Godzilla as before; but given the gyaos would instinctively see him as their enemy they'd probably focus on the giant turtle most. It is a really bad night to be Asagi sadly. Godzilla probably does win this round with Gamera forced to retreat with the gyaos chasing him out to sea. Their Atlantean enemy dealt with for now, the pair of super gyaos would focus on Godzilla but probably figure it was the time to multiply and increase their odds. They'd depart to sack Tokyo, leaving a battered and royally ticked off Godzilla to slowly pursue overland; but would probably stop off by the Hamaoka nuclear power plant to get a recharge.

The Super Gyaos would ravage parts of Tokyo and start constructing nests, leading to an attempted missile strike by the military which goes even worse than it did in canon given there's two of them. Gamera would arrive and destroy one nest, but even with his stronger form than in canon; he's outnumbered and thus the battle is fairly hard. Godzilla manages to catch back up via arriving by sea and attacks anything near him. Thankfully Gamera plus Asagi offering help she can would be clever enough to try and lure one of the Super Gyaos into the dinosaur's range. The battle becomes a 1v2v1 with Gamera and Godzilla not teamed up, but fighting on two fronts of a common foe who'd be liable to attack both given they're defending their sole nest. Via use of the nuclear pulse and managing to blast through one of its wings, Godzilla manages to kill one of the Super Gyaos and Gamera, stronger than in canon, kills the other one thanks to having already evolved the more maneuverable and mobile 'sea-turtle wings' alignment we saw in Movie 2.

The final brawl is thus a still ticked off Godzilla against Gamera, with both having already been wounded by the gyaos. Large swaths of Tokyo are set ablaze, which alongside Asagi's father joining in with her bid to help Gamera, helps tilt the odds enough for a haggard Gamera to launch a charged high plasma fireball while getting blasted by a irate atomic breath. Godzilla is blasted out to sea and Gamera collapses, appearing dead. After a short time, Godzilla rises back from the surf, burned and wounded, but well alive. Having no personal stake in this and the gyaos being dealt with, Godzilla departs to recuperate under the sea and a short time later a badly wounded Gamera revives enough to fly away.
