Weapons Talkback: MQ-1 Predator & MQ-9 Reaper UAV Drones

Post by BlankAccount »

Operation Yashiori, a last ditch joint mission by the U.S. and Japan to stop Godzilla before having to resort to dropping a nuclear bomb on Tokyo and hoping it kills him. The plan was multiple phases, with phase 1 being to get the monster to deplete it's energy reserves. After it's painful experience with three Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bombers injuring it with several GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOP) bunker busters (which yes they are conventional....I'm a fucking idiot), Godzilla had become exceedingly paranoid, even when it entered a sort of hibernation state to recharge it's energy reserves it would shoot down any UAV drones that were being sent to observe it.

This paranoia is what lead to the idea for phase 1. Use several sorties of UAV drones from a nearby U.S. military base to trick Godzilla into wasting all of his energy firing his energy rays at decoys before being knocked down and pumped full of a coagulant while exhausted. For this six sorties consisting of General Atomics MQ-1 Predator and General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper.

MQ-1 Predator: The predecessor to the Reaper, the Predator drones were used alongside their newer counterparts. It should be noted that while the Predator could carry more weapons, for whatever reason we only see one armed with Hellfire missiles.

MQ-9 Reaper: The successor to the Predator, the Reaper drones fought alongside their older counterparts.

Hellfire Missiles: A weapon I've covered in my Raptor-One talkback, both types of drones were armed with the American AGM-114 Hellfire Missiles (Air-toGround Missiles) with the MQ-1 Predator capable of carrying two Hellfire missiles and the MQ-9 Reaper able to carry four Hellfire missiles. The Hellfire Missiles are what's know as fire-and-forget missiles, meaning these anti-armor missiles can lock on to a target even after being fired and need no further assistance in tracking a target even in poor visual conditions such as smoke. The max speed of these missiles was mach 1.3 and could be fitted with several different types of warheads.

GBU-12 Paveway II: The MQ-9 Reaper was also armed with two GBU-12 Paveway II. The Paveway II is a laser guided smart bomb using a nose-mounted laser seeker and fins to steer it towards targets "painted" by said laser designation. The smart bombs have been further upgraded with GPS. The Paveway II is also what's known as a general-purpose (GP) bomb, meaning it is an air-dropped bomb that compromises between blast damage, penetration, and fragmentation. The Paveway II uses what's known Bang Bang Guidance for it's feedback controller, when getting off target the bomb will use it's fins to over-correct itself before deflecting so it's back on target. Though primitive this allows it to hit with stunning accuracy, within 3.6 feet of a target.

Unused Weapons: Both drones can use AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missiles, the Predator can use AGM-176 Griffin missiles, the Reaper can use Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and the British dual-mode Brimstone missile (Hellfire, Brimstone...I see what you did there U.K.) but these were not used in Shin Godzilla. It is odd that the one Predator we see is not armed with anything but a Hellfire missile while the Reapers are armed with both Hellfire missiles and Paveway II smart bombs.

Final Thoughts: Most of the Hellfire missiles and Paveway II smart bombs were shot down by Godzilla but that was all part of the plan, to take advantage of it becoming so cautious of aircraft and bombs after it's painful experience after the MOPs that it's waste it's energy over nothing. By the 5th sortie the creature had become so exhausted that it was hit by all the bombs and missiles. Amazingly while these did not harm Godzilla he still spent the rest of his energy blasting energy rays to destroy sortie 5 and 6, the creature having become so paranoid that it feared they might use more powerful weapons like the MOPs that could actually harm it.

The drones mission to drain Godzilla was both a success and a failure. A success in that the drones did trick a still not fully charged Godzilla into wasting all his energy right as he destroyed them all, exhausting him and allowing him to be knocked down and have tons of coagulant pumped into him. A failure in that Godzilla managed to recharge somewhat during the coagulant stage and fire off a blast, killing several workers and get back to his feet. Were it not for the back up plan to knock him down again the mission would have been a failure.

Overall the drones and weapons did an amazing job, not harming Godzilla but to trick him instead and while minimizing human deaths.
