If you listen very very VERY carefully it sounds like a highly distorted and Mechanical version of Godzilla's roar.

I know this isn't Toho, but anyone know how Showa Gyaos got his roar? It's been bugging me for ages and is one of my personal favorites.

Godzilla's roar was from a cello, Rodan from a violin, Angurius from a sax.

Just taking a wild guess but I think Gamera's roar is from a trumpet.

Interesting thread!!!

I thought it was a French Horn or some variety of brass instrument and a resin-covered glove.

A bass. As in a cello or larger member of the violin family.

Yeah its documented in the CD of Godzilla soundtracks of '54 to '74. It read that they took a cello and wand and began randomly making noises and recorded it to tape where they manipulate it further with pitch tuning and reverb.

I'm pretty sure it's a combination between a trumpet and Elephant noises.

That sounds about right. For Gyaos, I can't really tell. I think it was probably someone screaming into a mic and they altered it. That's just me.

It could also be a predatory bird's screech. Like an eagle or a falcon. I personally love that roar. It gives me the chills.....

Interesting info from G-fest. Someone asked how Ghidorahs roar was created and the guy taking questions said the theory is that an organ (the instrument) was used for the basic sound and then altered to make his famous roar.

Here's a link to the Kaijucast podcast were we discussed monster music and monster roars. I'm the one by the name of Erik Homenick and I talk about the creation of Godzilla's roar and the fine fellow Jim Figurski talks about some others. Fascinating stuff!

Personally one of the reasons Anguirus is my 1 Kaiju is because of his roar. It's so distinctive and so unique even Ghidorah or Rodan's roars don't compare to it, although his roars were more refined in the late 70's. They're like echos of an ancient past. Okay okay no more love poetry.

^ Good one

I feel Gigan is some sort of combo of things. Like Varan, he's a combo of Godzilla, Rodan, and Anguirus (or at least, that's what I've heard). Maybe it's a combo of an Eagle and Kamoebas

Varan is not a combo of Godzilla, Rodan and Anguirus, actually; Varan's roars are (from what I can tell) modified G'54 roars, as are Gorosaurus' and Showa Baragon's roars.

Gigan's roars are hard to pinpoint, though; from what I can tell, it sounds like something being scrapped along a surface; and kind of like rubber being burnt, actually. Might be a heavily modified eagle, though.

Out of all of Godzilla's roars, the original '54 and the '84 versions are my favorite. For '84 it sounds like they took the same sound from '54 and expanded on it with extending the roar etc. Great attack, and it just sounded deep, loud and ferocious. Virtually all the later roars are just too high-pitched and screechy-sounding but also way too quiet for such a big creature, let alone one that is King of the Monsters. The 2014's roar was good but most of the time the first part just sounded like noise, and easily drowned out when other sound effects or music going on.
