Monster Discussion #4: The Snowman

Post by JVM »

Probably the least discussed or mentioned of Toho monsters, most likely due to the obscurity of Half Human and Toho's attempts to virtually wipe it from memory.

I used to be a lot more optimistic and outgoing, believe it or not. I used to actually be passionate about this stuff.

I wouldn't say Toho wants to wipe it from memory. The Snowman still appears in books, and in general is widely publicized and even has toys/models of him. The connection to Ishiro Honda is likely the reason he is still mentioned so thoroughly.

Now Prophecies of Nostradamus? There is a film Toho wants us to forget. Hell for about a decade now, it has been removed from all of the official books to come out on their science fiction films. Even the Godzilla Chronicles, which made mention of it in their first volume, retroactively removed it in the later editions.

People are making fansubs of this film. Thank God, as it was really tough giving this a watch RAW.

For its unfavorable depiction of the Ainu.

Yeah, it's a shame really, it sounds like a really fun movie.

Was this released before or after Godzilla Raids Again?

After.

Half Human came out in August of 1995, Godzilla Raids Again came out in April.

Seriously? That's neat! I wonder if The Three Treasures (or whatever the movie with Showa Orochi is called) got the same treatment.
I'm about 99% certain fansubs of The Three Treasures (aka: Birth of Japan) exists. Just gotta know where to look.

This has always been a film I've been curious in. Yeah, I've heard it's not too good, but I'm a die-hard Toho tokusatsu fan. I kinda can't help it.

Is there a decent review of this film somewhere?
Or could someone do a review of it here?

It's a shame that the American producers of HALF HUMAN didn't do more - It was cool seeing the costume used for Monster's child in new scenes, but it would've been sooo awesome if they'd have shot scenes with the adult Snowman costume and had John Carradine actually be a part of the story instead of merely retelling it to his colleagues...

Wow, that's actually a great suit for a Bigfoot/Yeti monster. Is that the KKvsG King Kong suit, just modified? And is there virtually any way I can see this movie?

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA was released quite some time after HALF HUMAN.

The U.S. version is available on VHS, but boots of the Japanese version can be found. Though don't ask where, it's not allowed around here.

I'll gladly eat crow if it doesn't turn out that way....but at this point it feels painfully obvious, as it has for months.

I'm pretty sure that pic that OP posted isn't even the suit used in the film.

Yet another necrobump.

I thought this monster was good for what it is supposed to be (the abominable snowman/yeti), and it was an especially moving scene when the Snowman removed the rope from one of the lead characters' leg and freed him. It showed compassion even from a beast... Sad that the only film this thing is in is banned from an official release. I thought it was a great Toho film.

Honestly he's probably the most sympathetic of all Toho monsters. Shame he's been locked in the Toho vault forever.
