So...basically Honda made a film about the urban family life in Japan
heading into the 70's...and they threw some Godzilla footage into it
(old & new) & for that...it gets a lot of hate it doesn't deserve.

Honestly...I don't even really think of this film as an "actual" Godzilla
film...its more like a personal Honda project with some kaiju stuff
tacked on.

I think it’s fun and well acted
The only people that really hate this one are 15 year olds..
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

The majority of our members are under 21, I think; at the very least, under 28.

Me? I'm 33 and I still loathe the film. :) A few pages back, you'll find my essay on its existentially bleak implications...

Well...that's pretty awesome that the kaiju
genre is attracting a younger audience.

Forget whatever I said about you getting banned over Monster Zero, Grandad. If you can at least tolerate Revenge, you're clearly worth keeping around. Too few people can see the light, with that movie...

Okay, I guess I do get where Zarm's coming from with the bleakness, but I don't consider that a downside. And there is plenty of fun involved, so it balances out.

I think you might have about third place; but clearly, I'm right behind you in fourth.

I still try to wrap my head around talking to people who are both young adults, and consider 9/11 a historical event rather than a part of their lifetime...

Thank you Jag...

I appreciate the kind words.

Honestly...as Godzilla/Kaiju fans...we're all pretty lucky.

I mean just look at all the franchises that have been
"destroyed" or at least "maimed" in the last few years.

Alien, Predator, Terminator, Star Wars, Star Trek, Jurassic Park...

I still can't believe they managed to get Blade Runner 2049 right?

Shhh! You're going to jinx everything!

Also, plenty of people would say the Godzilla franchise has been maimed in the last few years. I ain't one of them, though.

Neither am I.

I think everything has been moving in a good direction
since 2014...and the first Pacific Rim was the best kind
of surprise a year earlier.

27 here and definitely hate this movie. As does my 28 year old wife.

I don't go around ragging on it going "OH MAI GAWD WERST MOVIE EVARRR" but it's certainly the lowest point of this franchise for me, personally.

I see the high points it has, and I've seen it a handful of times. Will likely watch it a handful more. But if someone asked me "What's the worst Godzilla movie ever made" this is easily my first pick.

Certainly that's low. That's in the bottom five for me. But this ranks lower.

Wow. Not even I go that far...

...But then, part of that is probably that I don't even think of '98 as part of the franchise to begin with. :)

Does that include 2014, or only everything since then?

I haven't re-done my top 10 and bottom 10 since the Anime Trilogy dropped, but I think off the top of my head I'd consider '98 4th in my bottom 5.

These are, again, just my opinions. (feel I need to emphasize that around here these days.)

Yes...I liked Godzilla 2014...Loved it even.

Jesus I'd been waiting 10 years for it & was
just happy that Big G was back.

I stood up & cheered when he blasted the
female M.U.T.O for the first time.

I'm a "Glass Half Full" kind of guy.

Likewise- and likewise for that scene. Just checking; in that case, I agree with your overall statement. For me, both 2014 and the anime trilogy represent positive developments in the franchise (and 2014 is either in my top 5, or #6 just below it). There hasn't been a movie since 2014 that I dislike. (Only a couple that I 'meh,' and neither of those is 2014!)

No, I really don't. I think it is an entirely decent movie. Just not the amazing thing that everyone else thinks it is.

It's just hard to argue 'it's not that awesome' without hyperbolizing/emphasizing the negatives.

I actually do that a lot. My board game group thinks I hate 7 Wonders; I just don't want to play it every other week. But it's hard to argue a positive should be a neutral; arguing against a positive always sounds like you're saying it should be a negative of equal and opposite proportion. :) It's kind of like those toasters or washing machines where, if you twist the knob just a couple of ticks, it doesn't even turn on- you have to crank it way further than you actually want to get it to turn on, then dial it back to where you actually want it to be.

For me, Shin, Monster Planet (and Skull Island, if that counts), were all decent, just not stellar. Whereas 2014 and City on the Edge of Battle were stellar.

...Which is definitely a statement that belongs on the 'Unpopular Godzilla Opinions' thread, I know. ;)
