Lost Project Discussion - King of Monsters: Rebirth of Godzilla (1979)

Post by SonOfGorgo »

As some of you may know, Toho did intend to produce a remake of their own debut Godzilla film in the late '70s among other projects that never came to be. It's even possible that they intended to release it in 1979, presumably to celebrate 25 years of Godzilla.

Personally, I myself think a remake/retelling of the original with updated special effects would be interesting but probably wouldn't leave as big a impact. But that's just my brief thoughts, what are yours? Do you think they should've produced this remake? What do you think would've been changed or updated? Would it be set back in '54, or the present time of the late '70s? What new cast do you think they would've had for the familiar characters like Yamane, Serizawa, Hideo, Emiko, etc?

Please feel free to express your thoughts, ideas & opinions in the comments below. Thank you.

Hm.. I do like the idea of a full recreation of the original movie. Although I doubt the effects would be THAT much better since 1975. It'll also be weird to have Godzilla as an antagonist again after ToMG just coming 4 years before. I think it would be better set in the 70's, just to make it a slight different from 1954. As for the characters, They would probably be recasted. Despite coming so soon after ToMG, I think it could have worked! But like you said, not leaving as big as an impact.

Only if they used the fake Godzilla suit and the 54 roar.

This is the full script found within THE BIG BOOK OF JAPANESE GIANT MONSTER MOVIES: THE LOST FILMS, which seems to throw the 'full on remake' out the window. According to the author, the film's actual Japanese title is Godzilla Resurrected: Godzilla, King of Monsters

This one sounds alright. Seeing Godzilla in another solo film and bringing back classic moments yet still keeping this fresh sounds fun! One could only wonder what he would look like however.

A guy who randomly stumbled upon this place one day, invested much too much time into it, and now appears to be stuck here for all eternity..and strangely enough, i do not regret it!
