Summer Clouds (1958, Mikio Naruse)
This another appealing offering by Naruse. It feels unfocused at times, because the characters that appear to be set as the two leads aren't given as much emphasis as their initial scenes would suggest. The plot diverges into the experiences of the characters who surround them, especially the couple played by Kumi Mizuno and Keiju Kobayashi. It doesn't work to the film's detriment however, but it's something that initially took me out, as I was expecting a more initimist approach after seeing Yearning. In the end, the traditional celebratory aspects at display win me over, it's an edifying experience.
