A Whistle in My Heart (Mikio Naruse, 1959)

Beautiful film about two ainu children who face discrimination in school. Strong performances by the two protagonists (Ryoko Koda and Kun Kubo), with supporting roles by Tohoscope regulars Akira Takarda, Kumi Mizuno, Akira Kubo, Yoshio Tsuchiya and Takashi Shimura. Curiously scored by Akira Ifukube, rather than Naruse's regular Ichiro Saito.

Highly recommended!

Now THIS sounds like one of those one of those great films that you rarely come across, kinda like All Quiet on the Western Front.
I need to find it.
