That American Release Credit Font.

Post by GodzillaFanatic2001 »

As I'm sure many people have maybe noticed, lots of Toho films releases in the 1960's have a certain type of font. As far as I know, it's been used by AIP for Godzilla vs The Thing, Destroy All Monsters, Frankenstein Conquers The World, Attack Of The Monsters, and presumably others which I have not yet seen of forgotten about.

It has also been used on UPA's releases of Monster Zero and War Of The Gargantuas.
You can see it at the 38 second mark in the video.

What I'm curious about is, is there a reason why all these films use the same font? I can understand it for just one company, but why would at least two different companies use the same font? Was it just an easy font to use for title graphics? Also, does anyone know what this font is called, if it even has a name?

Thank you! That's really cool!
I guess it was just an easy font to come by in the 1960/70's, kind of the Calibri or Times New Roman of its day.

It's even used in the international trailer for Monster Zero. Feel free to theorize.

Interesting that the trailer calls him "Radon". As far as I know, only the Hong Kong dubs call him that. The International dubbing for Destroy All Monsters calls him Rodan, so maybe Toho didn't have a standardized spelling at this point?

If MZ had an international dub, I guess that'd make it the only classic English dub where anybody actually says "Radon."

Doesn't Terror Of Mechagodzilla's English dub call him "Radon" during that little montage shot of all the "disaster monsters" attacking?
