I think the only showa film where Godzilla's durability was discussed was in Gojira, but even then, it wasnt said how or why he was like that.
Actually, the only time it was ever mentioned that Godzilla had regen was in Godzilla 2000, IIRC.

Re: Does Showa Godzilla actually have Regen?
Not that I'm being a Trollinator OR what I'm about to post helps or gives a good blanket answer BUT perhaps Showa Big-G's 'durability' and 'regeneration' somewhat was developed as the series went by? I mean given how in the earliest films - 1954/1955 he just proved immune to conventional weaponry and for Big-G 1954 it took the Oxygen Destroyer to kill him ... yet for Big-G 1955 onwards he pretty much had some crazy feats at times - well entombed in ice for 7 years ... then leading onwards to Big-G 1975 ...
Dr. Yamane in Big-G 1954 did express a desire to study Big-G Showa but that really seemed to be about it ... but interesting indeed how they didn't really explore much of Big-G's physiology that much or if he had extreme durability or Organizer G-1 to the extent of Big-G 2000.
But then again:
-Big-G 1964 - well Mosu-Goji how he endured up to 1 MILLION VOLTS of Electricity from the Artificial Lightning Generators ... though if he went abit longer he probably would have been down for the count - that's gotta be pretty durable eh? That probably would have fried the crap outta even Hedorah 1971 as it took some time for him to really get fried out ... though I wonder WHY they didn't just erect those Artificial Lightning Generators then ... that's got to be pretty 'intensive dosage' on a threshold of pain ...
-Big-G 1967 - that nasty 'spat' that Spiga/Kumonga gave him in the eye - AND how the protagonists commented 'they'll hibernate' when the snow-storm kicked in ...
-Big-G 1971 - already mentioned and enough said ...
-Big-G 1972 - the fact how Gigan 1972 sliced him on the occasions ... and the fact it didn't seem like they were like Organizer G-1 like in Big-G 2000 BUT later still Big-G 1972 had the strength to keep the fight to hand Gigan 1972 and King Ghidorah 1972's asses to them ...
-Big-G 1974 - BLEED LIKE A BLOODY FOUNTAIN ... YET mustering enough to still pack that EMP attack ... though probably Big-G 1972 DOES heal somewhat - just not as fast as Organizer G-1 ...

As to Godzilla healing between films, the explanation for that could simply be that he took time and healed. I don't know if dates are brought up in the films other than DAM being 1999, so it's possible that Godzilla would have had something closer to two or three years of healing between Gigan and Megalon, for example.

Or perhaps also the same time roughly for between Godzilla vs Hedorah 1971? Given how Godzilla 1971 really suffered a bit of an 'acidic sludgy surprise' - given it cost him parts of his upper hide, one of his eyes, one of his hands ... and probably his respiratory system ... although then again against Mecha-G 1974 - unless it was more of willpower and durability and the slight PIS Deux-Ex Machina being a living giant EMP Magnet ... he did also endure a bit of spam-shotting from Mecha-G 1974 overall ...KaijuFiend wrote:As to Godzilla healing between films, the explanation for that could simply be that he took time and healed. Re: Does Showa Godzilla actually have Regen?
Godzilla vs Biollante was the first film to actively bring up the idea of Godzilla's regenerative powers. G2000 was simply the first to go in depth about it. I guess his regeneration in the Showa series has been retconned into fact since the 90s but as the movies were made I just don't think it was something the filmmakers actively thought about.

GMK Goji seems to not be be big in the whole regenerative thing. Seems to have substituted it for the whole lost souls hocus pocus.
Kiryu Goji doesn't seem to be that big on it either.

Yeah, I don't think Kiryu Goji has it. I forget how much time passes between the two films but at the end of the first film he has a gaping wound in his chest. In the next film the wound is still recovering.LegendZilla wrote:GMK Goji seems to not be be big in the whole regenerative thing. Seems to have substituted it for the whole lost souls hocus pocus.

This makes some sense to me. Interesting Topic Here.ILL GREEN wrote:Some good points. I guess his regeneration depends on his radiation level. The more he has, the quicker he heals, but the less, then its slow.

Re: Does Showa Godzilla actually have Regen?
There were no rules or sci-faux explanations for Godzilla in those movies. "Regen" is not a concept that applies in any way.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.
