Monster Discussion #18: Ebirah (Showa)
Skipping the gargantuas because they have their own threads already...
Ebirah Monster Bio
Been a while since I saw Ebi in action, but I've always felt he was a rather underrated Godzilla villain. Now point, he didn't exactly stand out much, but he's one of the less-often mentioned monsters in Toho's monster saga.

I used to be a lot more optimistic and outgoing, believe it or not. I used to actually be passionate about this stuff.

Ebirah's cool. Godzilla tangling with a giant shrimp? Sign me up for some of that.

I know many people mocked him (F*** YOU, MST3K!), but I have loved his design since I first saw him back in 1997. Not to mention, he's probably the tastiest monster of Toho's roster.

Ebirah was one of my favorite Showa villian monsters. He was great in the 60's but they screwed him up in FW.

He's entertaining to watch, but I'd never pick him as a top favorite.

I like Ebirah. It's a basic monster, but stronger than it looks. Ebirah gave Godzilla a hard time underwater, and Godzilla is at home in the water. As has been said, Ebirah ate people, which most Toho monsters haven't been seen doing. Ebirah was a good suit and monster.

Added irony being its from the Showa series, we see some, but if I remember, Ebiriah would impale his victims to eat them...edgaguirus wrote:I like Ebirah. He's intresting, not the most intresting, but I like him. Glad he got an appearence in Godzilla Save the Earth and FW.

Ebirah rocks, both versions! I can't wait to actually play as him in a fighting game. If they can make Biollante work, why not Ebirah?
I also liked GFW Ebirah. He was badass strength and ferocity wise, durability though...

I agree that Ebirah is underrated. He may not have laser beams, he may not be one of the strongest monsters, but that's why I like him. I like mediocrity in kaiju power; not every kaiju needs to be super-powerful. I like to see more variety, and actually prefer fewer super-powerful monsters.

I'm going to be controversial and say that while I like the movie, I'm not a big fan of Ebirah. I would've preferred something more interesting than a giant lobster. A more mutated looking lobster, perhaps? *flame suit on*

Ebirah is OK.
Never been a huge fan, but I grew up watching 'Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster' on GoodTimes VHS countless times, and will always have a fondess for the big lobster.

Re: Monster Discussion #18: Ebirah (Showa)
As many others have said, I appreciate and have a fondness for the early, simple monsters that didn't have a bunch of flash. Ebirah was perfect for the movie he was in; he gave Godzilla trouble, so he deserves recognition in that area. Not one of my favorite, but among the less popular, he ranks right up there. He does NOT belong on land, either (looking at you, Final Wars).

His suit and simplicity made him good, but what made him great is his theme song. Beat be bumpin.'
Stay cool, man.

Definitely one of my favorites. It's a shame that he was never in anything other than Horror of the Deep, but then again, it was probably for the best. Can't really imagine him in DAM, or anything else for that matter.

Re: Monster Discussion #18: Ebirah (Showa)
I love Ebirah. As a kid I used one of those plastic lobsters they always have in sea-food restaurants as an Ebirah. to fight against a Hong Kong knock-off Godzilla.
