Rodan on Monsterland
If I remember correctly, Rodan is supposed to be kept on Monsterland by magnetic walls. How does that work?

Re: Rodan on Monsterland
Well, this magnetic wall generates a small electro magnetic field. It's not strong enough to act on Monsterland's equipment, though the equipment is still shielded just in case. This small EM field reacts to the lepton particles in Rodan's brain, causing him or her disorientation. The closer Rodan flies to the wall, the more Rodan loses it's sense of balance and orientation, making flying difficult.
Or it could be some cool sounding junk science. I'm going for the second.

I guess it is an invisible wall- like if a bird flies into a window.

Or implants. Either is possible, considering they managed to capture and move Rodan to the island in the first place so they would've had time and opportunity.he-ba wrote:So you mean they have some sort of collar on Rodan?

Re: Rodan on Monsterland
I find it funny how we're calling Rodan a dog, yet most people think that Anguirus or Baragon is a dog
Speaking of which, they never explain how they keep Angy on the island. Is it the same as Godzilla and Mothra?

Actually I think it wouldn't KILL them, maybe stun them (unless it's a monster like Mothra)edgaguirus wrote:I imagine poison gas would work on all the land based kaiju.
It's like a dog. You use the electric fence, they run into it, and never leave the lawn again for fear that it's still there!

I don't see poison gas working on Godzilla, at least. If he withstood Mothra's poison powder and Hedorah's fumes, I'm betting he could tank any gas we could throw at him.

Not that Toho had the slightest idea about this, back in 1968, but...
http://phys.org/news/2013-02-birds-migr ... netic.html
Yes, I know... Rodan is not a bird, but Toho drew some parallels between how Rodan operates and how birds do. Anyway, if Rodan also uses the Earth's magnetic field to navigate, a sufficiently strong "invisible magnetic force screen" could wreak havoc with that sense (see the linked article on strong magnetic pulses disorienting birds) whenever he got too close to it: leading him to turn back.

Re: Rodan on Monsterland
Well, the idea that strong magnetic fields could affect living creatures has been around for a long time. For example, Anton Mesmer, who accidentally discovered hypnotism in the 18th Century, thought that he was accomplishing his cures by affecting the flow of 'magnetic fluid' in his patients' bodies.demoylition wrote:Using modern science for a bullshit explanation of 60s movie phenomena...cool.
It's just that a lot of specific discoveries about what magnetic fields actually could do (from guiding birds to mapping blood flow) had to wait for much more sophisticated tech.
Toho's screenwriters apparently put a lot of stock in magnetic waves even before Destroy All Monsters, if the English dubbing for Monster Zero is accurate. In a strange way, it actually seems fitting that some of their guesses turned out to be closer to the truth than they might have believed... just as Gene Roddenberry was blowing smoke when he thought up Star Trek's transporters, but scientists now are identifying applications of quantum entanglement that could conceivably make something similar, possible.
You won't catch me stepping into one, though...
