Godzilla Raids Again: why use anguirus?

So I thought about it and I see that anguirus is a huge kaiju in the Showa series, but I find it strange that they would use anguirus as an enemy when in the late 60's and early to mid 70's he was Godzilla's Best friend. So I would like to get your takes on this.

Anguirus was originally an opponent to Godzilla and I'm sure the creators never had preconceived notions of Anguirus being a longtime pal of Godzilla for the rest of that era. The same seems likely for Mothra, who Godzilla fought in their first meeting yet became allies in future installments (Ghidorah, DAM).

this, thy had no clue godzilla would turn into a huge franchise and they wanted a cool opponent. plus anguirus was actually a worthy foe back then
