What happened to anguirus in Godzilla vs megalon

I remember that scene. He falls into a hole and Godzilla looks back and then there is a explosion and Godzilla roars in anger. At first I though Anguirus got killed in the quake. But he comes back in GvsMG. I know a lot of G fans hate this film, but I love it because my step-father took me to see this movie in the theater and it is one of the best memories from my childhood.

I envy you! MEGALON was the only Godzilla movie from the 70s that I didn't see at the theater.

Anguirus had a nice run with 3 films in row, even if two were cameos. Baragon and Varan wish they were that lucky.
