Virus 1980 was fantastic. I suggest anyone who hasn't seen it already do so. Had a friend over Friday night and we watched Matango. I had seen it before but my friend hadn't.
I'm continually trying to peck at the backlog of Toho films I haven't seen, but I'm starting to hit a point where it's getting harder and harder to find some of the rarer stuff. Currently the two films I want to see the most are Blue Christmas, Sayonara Jupiter and ESPY. Amazon Japan has ESPY to rent for 300 yen. I might do that. Issue is it definitely won't have English subtitles or audio tracks; which is FINE, because I'll understand most of it. At the same time it's frustrating liking a movie and not being able to appreciate everything about it. It's for the same reason I refuse to watch Zone Fighter right now, although I'm getting closer and closer to getting around to it.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' (1990)- It's gone without saying for years, but the Jim Henson company really brought their A-Game to the physical effects on top of being a movie that manages to smoothly balance having different tones. And for any and all kids that had been watching the cartoon up to that point (but never read the original mirage comics), it must have been quite an experience to see a much darker take on Shredder. Fitting that I saw this on a date where I had leftover pizza for lunch.
'Venom'- I can definitely see where all the negative reception for this movie's come from given its horrible pacing, fairly dull acting (especially from Tom Harding), and romance subplot that I didn't really care for. The scenes with Venom himself were cool though, especially the final battle with Riot.

I just watched ''Crawl'' again this time threw Amazon Prime. It was an enjoyable flick.
Surprisingly the CGI Gators looked pretty damn good, right up there with the Crocodile from ''Rogue''
I still say Alligator 1980 is the best of the bunch, followed by Rogue, then Black Water and maybe Crawl.

I'll always love Lake Placid as my favorite killer croc/ gator film but Rogue was surprisingly decent. It's not exceptionally fantastic or anything of that nature but its surprisingly suspenseful and well acted for a lower budget creature feature.

I recently finished parts 1-4 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's really frikin' good! Although the switch form Hamon to stands was a little jarring at first imo.

I'm watching The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and it is an improvement over the first movie. The stakes are higher with more ballsy action scenes and deadlier Games than the first one (no pun intended) and Katniss is tougher, braver and more fleshed-out in this movie as is the rest of the story, though one thing that really stood out to me is how the first few scenes are eerily similar to the first movie's. They all follow the EXACT same setup/sequencing, anyone who's seen these movies knows what I'm talking about.
Still a damn good movie, though, I liked it more than the first one. Now here's hoping Mockinjay 1 and 2 don't disappoint (I blind bought the Hunger Games Collection on Blu-Ray), I've heard a lot of polarizing things about those.

Re: The Latest Movie/TV show You Watched Topic 2.0
I just watched The Lighthouse on Prime Video. I never thought a low-budget drama/horror film starring just two actors in one location (okay, two locations; the outside of the titular lighthouse) could work, but dammit, it did. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson literally steal the show with ham performances and fun AF characters in a solid descent into madness tale. It's not a movie I would rewatch or own on Blu-Ray, but it was better than it had any right to be given the limited-scale concept. I'm under the impression that most anything with Willem Dafoe is worth watching. Oh and bonus points for the black and white.
I definitely look forward to seeing Pattinson as Batman (Battinson), provided he was just kidding about not working out and actually takes the role seriously (one can only hope).

Finished Swamp Thing. Pretty disappointed this was never really given a chance, its pretty good. Didn't expect all the appearances by other DC comics characters. I liked that it wasn't afraid to be gruesome but didn't go overboard with it like some might have expected. All in all it was a pretty solid show. Wouldn't have been surprised to see Constantine pop in if it ever got a second season. Sadly it'll probably never happen.

Re: The Latest Movie/TV show You Watched Topic 2.0
I watched Max Payne on Prime Video just to refresh my memory a bit, it's as bad as I remember. An adaptation of a game with all that shooting takes until the last 20 minutes to finally have a couple brief shootouts? And yeah, it deviated from the game's story (why? You're essentially given a movie in game form made INTO a movie), but it was a mess ignoring this. Holy cow, so much unbelievable shit I don't even know where to begin, and not just because of the supernatural hallucinogenic drug that makes people see fucking winged demons, either. The characters are bland and not interesting with a plot that drags. Nevermind the lack of narrations, bullet time (except for one scene where he outshoots a guy standing upright while falling backwards with a shotgun), or one-liners from the game, the movie was awful ignoring this.
I know games-to-movies haven't had the best track record for obvious reasons, but this is one of the easier properties to get right on the big screen given the film noir style of the games, the gritty atmosphere and the fact that it's framing device is literally taken from fucking comic book pages, but they completely botched it with a poorly-paced, edited and written film that doesn't match the atmosphere it was setting up at all. It was so dull, boring and shallow that even Marky Mark is bland in this (congrats on having 2 phoned-in performances in a row, never thought I'd see that from you).
Hell, even the dead family scene was completely dumbed down, perhaps the biggest cardinal sin of all in this movie. It was done so much better in the game, I felt like I could actually feel Max's pain (no pun intended) when he mourns over his dead wife and baby.

Got the Criterion Bruce Lee set, and before I can enjoy myself I have to take my medicine and get the theatrical version of Game of Death out of the way first. God, I hate this ghoulish film which is like the Raymond Burr scenes in Godzilla, King of the Monsters if those were 90% of the film, nowhere near as well done or cleverly staged, and if Raymond Burr wasn't actually a good actor and was just some guy they found on the street. That's Game of Death.
But hey, the 35 minutes of footage Bruce Lee did actually shoot for Game of Death is also on the disc! Going to watch that next.

A movie I've been dying to watch I just found IS on Prime Video and I watched it the other day, that movie is the original Rollerball. I wanted to watch the original to drown out the memories of the godawful remake, and it definitely holds up as a cult classic. I love the distopian themes they were going for and the actual Rollerball action scenes, while pretty substandard by today's standards (no pun intended) were pretty unique for their time given the state of practical effects at the time. Hell, compare it to the remake, the cinematography of the actual sport actually looks pretty damn good, you can actually tell what the hell is going on.
And to think that the guy who directed Die Hard and Predator directed the remake.

The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee
Hey guys I last watched the very obviously straight to streaming Paul Hogan movie called The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee.
If you like obvious jokes that are drawn out way too long, then you might like any of the Crocodile Dundee movies. But you might also like this movie as well.
The best part was Paul's dream sequence about Crocodile Dundee: The Musical.

Okay... massive nerd warnings incoming.....
Scoob!
Wow.... Just wow.
There was potential here. There was a clear sign of this film being good or at least fun, but it seemed that there was a completely different writing team brought on after the first ten minutes because talk about a whiplash in overall feel and tone. Instead of just making a Scooy-Doo film (You know, the gang gets involved in a case involving a ghost, find clues to who it is, and capture/solve the case) the filmmakers seemed more interested in making a massive millennial pool with some Hanna-Barbara nods and references sprinkled in.
Have most of the gang barely share any screen time, have Shaggy and Scooby feel incompetent and jealous of one another (We've already done this) No real Blue Falcon, have Captain Caveman make an appearance, but only visually, not in actual character or voice. It seems that the only characters that they nailed 100% were Dick Dasterdly and Muttley, but again they barely share any screen time together like Shag/Scoob and the gang.
I fully understand now what the critics meant by this film feeling like a Hanna-Barbara gathering that's afraid of being a Hanna-Barbara gathering.....
As for positives: That first ten or so minutes was great. I loved that segment of the film. As for some other things, when the characters were actually acting like themselves, they were alright. Scooby and Shaggy and a few funny scenes, there were some slapstick that felt in spirit of Scooby-Doo, and the main story honestly felt like something you would expect from a Scooby-Doo story dealing with real ghost/demons. I just wish that they focused on that aspect with this film: A Scooby-Doo Story
Oh.... and that reveal of the upgraded modern Mystery was so incredibly insulting that I actually shouted at the TV screen...

47 Meters Down, 47 Meters Down Uncaged & Piranha 3D
Hey guys the last few movies I watched where the creature features 47 Meters Down, 47 Meters Down Uncaged & Piranha 3D.
I actually like the 47 Meters Down movies well enough. I think I liked the second one the most, probably because of the blind sharks. Something that's at least fairly new to the shark movie genre. You have to buy into the conceit not that a group of girls would get into a similar but different situation but that both events would take place exactly 47 Meters Down.
I think Piranha 3D is a movie that has parts of a good movie but interlaced with a soft porn which is an aspect I never liked. I get that it's remake of Roger Corman's Piranha one of my old favorites and that Roger Corman flicks have naked girls as well as slasher flicks but it seems amplified here. I guess they just play it up to make the Piranha victims part of a moral comeuppance. Otherwise there is a really good killer fish movie in there. I particularly like the return of Richard Dreyfuss.

Nightmare (1964) - One of more than a few Psycho-influenced thrillers written by Jimmy Sangster for Hammer. A young woman, who as a little girl saw her father stabbed to death by her mother, begins having nightmares about an unfamiliar woman likewise stabbed through the heart. She begins to fear she's going insane just like her mother. As is typical with this subgenre, lots of twists and surprises designed to keep you guessing til the end, but the key twists are pretty predictable. Atmospheric photography and a few good performances but otherwise not as good as...
Paranoiac (1963) - Another Sangster deranged killer movie for Hammer. The plot is much more convoluted and harder to summarize. This one has more overt Psycho references, including There are more twists and they're more effective and less predictable here. Scream of Fear is my favorite Hammer film in this subgenre but Paranoiac isn't too far behind.

The Sangster Hammer thrillers are an interesting little sub-genre of their own. I think Paranoiac is my favorite, largely for Oliver Reed's performance and some really creepy imagery, but Scream of Fear does maybe have the more compelling storyline.Terasawa wrote:Nightmare (1964) - One of more than a few Psycho-influenced thrillers written by Jimmy Sangster for Hammer. Scream of Fear gets the nod for me because of the couple of last act twists--neither of which I saw coming the first time--that one-up each other. The final revelation is so good.
It's neither Hammer nor Sangster but I'm also fond of William Castle's Homicidal, basically his version of Psycho. It's schlocky and ridiculous (that's Castle for ya) but does make a good mystery with a conclusion that, in my experience, no one ever anticipates.
