Controversial teen sex commentary film, 'Cuties' rallies rabid backlash among Twitter, causing millions to cancel their Netflix subscriptions.

Bit of an... overreaction. A Serbian Film and The Human Centipede movies were on Netflix at one point (movies that exist purely to gross out and were outright banned in many countries because they do), did I cancel my subscription because of it? No, I just didn't watch them, simple as that.

Though I must say, IF Netflix actually produced a film sexualizing minors, then they definitely deserve the backlash, though I'll admit I didn't bother to read up on the film as of this writing.

The film is meant as a satire against the sexualization of minors. Netflix just did a really shitty job of advertising it as such (if they even knew it was a satire to begin with).

I wonder if "Where The Dead Go to Die" got banned in other countries.

It actually got banned in Canada, Ireland and the UK and was never even released in many parts of the world. It's available exclusively as an unrated cut on DVD/Blu-Ray in the US (probably because it would get an NC-17 here).

Just based on the descriptions on that page, it sounds like another exploitation film. Can't say I'm surprised nor am I shedding a tear that it's banned in other countries.

Doesn't A Serbian Film have a scene where a father is forced to rape his own child?

Surely that can't be worse than anything in Cuties?

Because A Serbian Film did not use a real baby!

Please stop trying to defend this, you're not changing anyone's mind and you're just making yourself look really bad by doing this.

I'm not defending anything, dude. I'm trying to make sense of all of this. A Serbian Film isn't something I'd ever have an interest in seeing. I've read it's description on Wikipedia and thought the whole thing sounded gross and unpleasant.

Cuties isn't exactly the type of movie that gets my attention either, regardless of controversy. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy/horror/monster-stan. It's the fantastical that attracts me to fiction, not coming-of-age dramas from France.

I'm sorry for say you were defending it.

A Serbian Film, while hard watch for the vast majority of people, the filmmakers didn't harm a living thing. It was all staged.

Cuties, crossed a line for nearly everyone. The filmmakers used real children to mimic sexual acts, that's a line you never crosse. I hate that I have to say. You have no idea, how hate that I have to say it.

If Cuties was fake and staged, very few people would be angry. For me, a film can so what ever, as long as it is fake. If a film has real death, human and animal, I want nothing to do with it. But Cuties, went beyond that. It's just cp and should be banned.

That argument, I can understand. That clears things up a lot.

If I may get a little personal, though, I'm not sure how I should feel about this film.

My younger sister, for the past ten years, attended dance class as an extracurricular activity. Every year, for the past ten years, I attended my sister's dance recitals and shows with the rest of my family. And I've seen, first-hand, in real life, the very same scenes that are mirrored in Cuties: children in skimpy costumes, performing dance routines in front of an adult audience that often had sexualized moves. They were cheered on by the crowd, especially by over-eager moms who screamed and whistled whenever they performed something they thought was impressive. These dance recitals are also filmed, and the DVDs are handed out to families at the end of the year.

The only difference between Cuties and these real-life dance recitals I experienced, was that Cuties had the intention of provoking revulsion in its audience, rather than applause. It was made to criticize the whole affair. That's a big reason as to why I was confused when the movie started getting torn apart online for these same scenes. It's been called child porn. It's been called pedo-bait. People are calling to have the movie banned.

I don't write this as a defence of Cuties – again, I haven't seen the film – but to express how... bizarre this whole situation is for me. Your argument that they used real children, in skimpy outfits, mimicking sexual acts is a good one. But then... my sister's dance recitals were like this, and I never heard anyone raise any objections. Not from the crowd, not from my family, not even from my own sister. Aren't they being sexualized in the same way? How come no one seemingly had a problem with it? How is this any different?

Does that mean my sister's dance recitals were child porn, because they were filmed by a crew at put onto DVDs? Did the dance lessons she attended for the past ten years also cross a line? If so, then how come Cuties is taking all the hate, and not these real-life dance schools across North America, which the film reflects?

If my sister's dance lessons haven't crossed a line, then wouldn't Cuties also be innocent? Wouldn't it be arguably more ethical, because it's using the topic to make a stand against it?

Again, this isn't a defence of the film, I'm just having a lot of trouble wrapping my head around this, due to my family's experiences.

I haven't watched it, don't intend to, but from what I've read, it's definitely not CP. The female director wanted to make an uncomfortable film arguing against the sexualization of children and stuff, and like 99% of the backlash is from people who haven't seen it because Netflix marketed it wrong and got people thinking it's some kind of CP.

I know I haven't seen it, but have you? I don't think we should pass judgement based on the backlash. Never trust internet backlash from people who haven't seen it.

No, it is CP. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE SEEN IT,ARE SAYING THAT IS WHAT IT IS.

The movie has mutilp sense of real children exposing their genitals to older people. One children was five years old.

This whole thing is so bad that the Texas state house representative opening an investigation into Netflix and people behind the film.

This is my final thoughts on the matter, the movie itself is utter filth and should have never been made, but very saddly it was. I hope that investigation dose go through and every single person involved with the movie, the parents of the children in the movie and anyone defending it will be hold accountable for this evil.

I watched Cuties tonight. I must say, it’s not as bad as I thought, but it’s still bad. Netflix’s advertisement of this film disgusted me deeply though, as I have two younger sisters (12 and 14).

Actually, I've heard it involves 10-year-olds literally doing sex acts. They literally hump the floor, grab their privates, dress provocatively, take dick pics and show them, all while having the camera zoomed in on their ass. IMDb literally lists it as a pedophilia film and many lawyers have issued statements agreeing with this.

Filming a supposedly anti-pedophilia movie in a way that involves prepubescent kids doing sex acts and even glorifies it sounds contradictory, tasteless and, yes, pedophilic.

Not defending this film (especially not after reading about what exactly it entails; thanks for the heads up, though), but a film involving pedophilia, necrophilia, rape and incestual rape involving an infant (!) isn't harmless by ANY stretch of the imagination. There's a reason why it's banned in many parts of the world as I alluded to earlier.

And a lot of other people who have seen it said it is not. And I highly doubt any actual genitals were exposed to anyone. At best maybe some camera work made it look that way, like when a woman allegedly shows her boobs, but all we see is her back and out of shot her breasts are actually really covered up.
I just feel people are more upset over the idea of this film than anything shown on screen. But I call bull that a five year old is actually exposing herself in a pornographic manner.

Anyone care to discuss the controversy surrounding the Mulan remake from Disney? In particular, its connections to Chinese government organizations responsible for genocide of the Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang province?

Another gigantic black eye for the film industry. It can't catch a break at all this year.

Disney is deep shit for this one. I heard that a cross party investigation into Disney's links to the CCP because of this. between this, cuties, cinemas being closed, every new release seeingly bombing and the ridicules new stipulations for the Oscars. It's no surprise that people are saying Hollywood is dying.

I find it a little strange that the people that defended the decision to remove episodes of satirical comedies like 30 Rock and the Golden Girls for being offensive are now defending the sexy 11 year old movie.

Its a weird hill to pitch your tent on guys.

Personally, I am typically never on the side of censorship, but oversexed preteens is a line I'd rather not see crossed. I'm not saying #CancelNetflix, but could you at least remove the film from the front page so I don't to look at it? The only way I'd accept it is if it was a fake movie that was put there as bait for a Chris Hansen style sting for pedos, lol.

Could you imagine that? You press play on the movie and Chris Hansen pops up on the screen and tells you to take a seat? lol.

I hear you, and a lot of em keep repeating that same tired "it's a commentary against sexualization of kids" when it's clearly a glorification. It's not anti-sexualization of kids at all. At one point, an adult even gives a blank stare like he's turned on by 11-year-olds twerking and floor-humping/crotch-grabbing.

Even if no such scenes existed, you don't speak out against something in a movie by showing and frequently zooming in on it, it's like calling Texas Chainsaw Massacre (or any slasher movie) a statement against hyper violence or Saw/Hostel an anti-torture statement. Sorry, but that shit wouldn't fly with anyone for OBVIOUS reasons.
