Godzilla/Toho References in Other Media Thread

This is the place where can discuss Toho references in media. My first one is obscure, and it might be a stretch but here we go.

In the 1991 film, Drop Dead Fred, the titular imaginary character talks to the protagonist (when she’s a child) about how he...

“Flew to Venus and fought a three-headed beast”

Sounds like a Showa King Ghidorah reference to me. Maybe even a Zone Fighter reference because that’s the only time we actually see him on Venus, and he fights Zone while on the planet.

It seems highly unlikely to me that they’d know Zone Fighter, much less have seen it. ZF was never shown outside Japan. And all references to Venus in the English version of Ghidrah (the version they’d have been far more likely to have seen) were changed to Mars. It’s probably just an interesting coincidence.

I know everyone remembers the Billy and Mandy episode where they go to Japan. It was cool to see Gamera fight Ghidorah even if he was made out of cats lmao

Believe it or not, an episode of The Golden Girls referenced Rodan, with our favorite prehistoric flyer being used for Sophia to make a cutting insult against Blanche.
