Review
Anthony Romero

To be completely honest, I haven't a clue what company put out this disc, which is a pretty tell tale sign that it's probably not a legitimate release. It's certainly not a DVD-R, that much is clear, yet there is no company name on the cover, or any mention anywhere on the DVD itself. The only identifying aspect of it is the call number of ED118. Regardless, the overall quality of the disc is at least competent, despite its total lack of extras.

 Video:

I will give this disc some credit, as considering that it's a region free release (most likely unlicensed too), the quality is surprisingly good. The colors are pretty distinct, for example, with only minor wash out in some scenes due to the saturation level. Unfortunately, it tends to suffer from a good deal of grain from whatever source material was used for the transfer, while artifacting (pixilation) is also noticeable. The disc does maintain the movie's original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, though, and is also anamorphic, making it better then most other releases that would fall under the region 0 category.

 Audio:

The disc has one audio track, which is a DTS 5.1 surround presentation of the original Japanese audio. For a DTS track, this disc is hardly an exemplary example as to what these presentations are capable of, but the distinction in the different channels is still good while the dialogue is all crystal clear on the audio track.

As for the subtitles, the movie is presented with only a removable English option (further supporting that this is probably unlicensed considering there are no Thai ones). Unfortunately, they are pretty awful, even for region 0 standards, as they present such immortal translations as: "So, no spare, kill every ones", "Gather to my 6 pennies", "let's find a way to make happy live first" and "Took my preciousest treasure away". At best, it sounds like you are hearing a transcript of Yoda talking; at worst, one has no idea what the subtitles are even trying to get across. There are more then a few lines in the film that the subtitles miss altogether as well.

 Extras:

In terms of supplemental content, this disc has some chapter stops and nothing more. Oddly enough, the language on the main menu is English here, while the language for the chapter stops is all in Thai.

 Overview:

Bottom line, if someone has a pretty good grasp on Japanese, and doesn't need subtitles much, then this disc is a fair choice considering it can often be found for very cheap and the video and audio quality aren't bad. Those not very well versed, though, should definitely look else where as the movie is going to be pretty hard to follow from the subtitle job here.
